Working in Southern Sudan
About Juba
Juba is the permanent regional capital of southern Sudan.
The city is a river port, situated on the River Nile.It is a transport hub with local and international road communications, including road links to Kenya, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is approachable from Uganda by road and by air.
Juba is 800 km from Kampala by road. Juba has been devastated by 21 years of war, and is coming up with only basic infrastructure.
Normal accommodation is in the form of tents on hire, or very basic buildings, some of which are situated in camps set up by various companies that are working in the region. Hotels and restaurants are available but not up to international standards. Hence one may have to opt cooking for oneself.
Medical facilities are very basic with only one hospital that serves the whole city, and a few other clinics.
At present, the availability of materials and other day to day requirements is not good. All food and other items required for day to day sustainability are imported through Uganda and Kenya and hence are substantially expensive than in Kenya or Uganda. As a result of the comprehensive peace agreement between Northern and Southern Sudan administration though, development is fast and improvements are taking place.
